The title of the album, faith in the absence of certainty is inspired by the series Earthsea books by Ursula Le Guin. This is an idea that I have come to terms with as I learned and mapped my way from a dark period within my own life. The writing of this album has gone hand in hand with that journey also. There has been the realization that in life there is no absolute certainty, we must face ourselves, our deepest fears and doubts in order to grow.

Initially I needed fresh inspiration and a change in direction from previous projects where I have worked with pre-recorded materials, sampler-based instruments, and effects. On this project I aimed to get back outside, reconnect with nature, capture field recordings. I spent time around the west coast of Ayrshire gathering these in the early morning, I wanted to let this inspire the process. I also moved back towards using synthesizers and programming to create sounds and textures. I wanted to combine the influence of nature with a softness generated by the synths and effects within the production process. The idea was to articulate a sense of calm and acceptance, a relieving of stress around the things that get caught within us and pull us down. The final mixes went to a wonky Fostex reel to reel, the wow and flutter is apparent on a few of these track.

The creation of this was a learning curve as I developed new techniques and found creative ways to make things happen. This reflects our lives overall as we find our way along the path that we can usually only make sense of when we get the opportunity to look back upon it.
